We have had a busy month in the studio again, working with Rykodisc on 2 new packages, moved into a new, bigger and better studio space, and creating the logo and identity for an old victorian B&B in upstate NY.

We are also editing another photographers book, someone I worked with a long time ago when I was VP of Creative at Virgin, we are now both rep’d by the same agency so it was nice to reconnect and help to present this photographer in a new way, I will post the outcome soon enough but until then I have to keep in under lock and key.

Echo Designlab will be featured in two upcoming books in Europe. The first for Red Publishing and the second for MONSA Barcelona Publications in Spain. They will both showcase the work we have done through the years for the music industry. I saw some early spreads, it will be a very nice showcase and it is an honor to be part of them. Thank you!

With Spring comes a move to our new studio, more light (I’ll be okay don’t worry) more room and more work to do.

We had our first photoshoot in the studio with Megan McCormick on Rykodisc for her new CD which we are working on now. It was nice to be able to climb out our windows onto the roof. Besides the new studio and the above mentioned CD, the studio has been pretty busy updating our sites with new work, both here and on theConspiracy site. The movie The Jonses came out last week with David Duchovny and Demi Moore, Echo and theConspiracy were lucky enough to work on the motion graphics for the movie as well as branding the fictitious company the stars worked for in the movie. We started a facebook fan page as well. New work will be published here and on facebook in the coming days so watch for it.

    photogs

Over the past 2 years I have been asked to redirect portfolios and books for a bunch of amazing photographers. As a Creative Director who has seen hundreds of books come across my desk at the companies I used to work for both in Advertising and in the music industry, I know what I like to see, then, being on the flip side as someone who also shows my photo-illustration and design books around, I have been able to help the direction and flow of these great photographers and find the “story” or “thread” that runs through the work. I want the books to tell stories through common elements, whether they be a color or subject matter or even shape. Its amazing how the stories emerge and create a great flow. The image here shows a few of the books I have done. I love the process and it gives me a chance to go through some pretty amazing photos in the process. These people inspire me and I thank them all for the chance to work with them. I urge you to check them out by viewing their websites. They are…

    A.M.Crows

Worked with Rykodisc to create this package for Allison Moorer’s new album Crows. We wanted to give the package a dark yet opulent quality so we found this great old turn of the century house in Staten Island (of all places).

I hired Angela Kohler to take the photos of Allison, she did an amazing job in a short amount of time. While she shot Allison, I buzzed around taking my own photos for the rest of the packaging, the walls with painted murals of scenes in Switzerland, the amazing floors and peeling paint. I gathered all of this up with my collection of caligraphy and old postcards to create this package, I then worked in the crow imagery which fit nicely into the pieces to make it beautiful and dark yet rich and colorful, very much like the music.

    Old School

    Posted in: Inspiration

I have been designing and creating images for over 15 years. Anyone designing today who grew up in the 80’s heavily in the music scene most likely shares my love for the likes of Vaughan Oliver, Neville Brody and Peter Saville to name a few. They continue to amaze me and their influence as well as Designers Republic and a few others can be seen in our studios work. I do think that design has made a come back in the past few years as an important tool for a brand or artist as it helps define a brand. There are so many surfaces and screens and so many brands struggling to be seen on them that it does tend to bring up the caliber of design and in our case, innovation as well.

What I love to see is that some of my heros from back in the day are still going strong and are able to make themselves current without sacrificing their personal style. I just came across some new Arena Magazines by Neville Bordy on Dezeen. What I find amazing is that Brody’s design is timeless, these could easily have been designed in 1988. Hats off.

    Posted in: Projects

It was another busy week in the studio, We finished up the new CD for Ryko artist Allison Moorer, launched the site for the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) Both projects very different but both very rewarding.

I am gearing up for a few busy weeks heading into the holidays. Balancing between websites and branding for Advertising and marketing companies to iphone applications and music packaging, its good to be busy.
